26 Apr Hiking from the Alps to the Alpilles
We are currently putting the final touches on an exceptional trip: hiking from the Alps to the Alpilles. We begin by hiking dramatic Alpine glaciers and end up hiking and biking in the Alpilles. The Alpilles are a chain of smaller mountains in Provence, southern France. This trip is the result of our long time obsession of this area. Join us and be blown away by beauty. You will be charmed by the fabulous combination of these two regions.
The glacial Alps
We start hiking in the Alps of Switzerland with some wild routes up to 3000 meters altitude. Here, we can soak up spectacular vistas of snow-covered summits.
This is your chance to get up close to some of the most daunting and majestic mountains in the world. We will take you on a trail that leads to a charming old mountainside refuge. This refuge is used to climb one of the most beautiful 4000 meter-high Alpine peaks. We will tackle the ascent and descent of this lovely hike in the same day. The reward is the beautiful views. Finally, a small, snaky trail winds us up to a plateau close to the glacier where the technical hike begins. This hike starts with all the shades of green that you can imagine. It ends with the white and grey of the creaking glacier that will stop you in your tracks. Of course this is only one example of our hikes in the Alps that we love but it starts to give you an idea of the great contrast to the South of France.
Now we transition to the Alpilles in the South of France and we will lead you on a spectacular electric bike ride deep into a valley with small river that expands into a torrent when it rains. This winding track takes you along the yellow and cream coloured terrain and into the dense, bushy vegetation that is Provence. The scents of lavender, rosemary and other herbs that line the trail are intoxicating and good reminder of where you are… a perfect contrast to the days at high altitude in the Alps.
Rugged peaks to rolling hills
Although the Alps and the Alpilles are very different from each other they share that same deep blue sky and horizon. As a result they inspired Vincent Van Gogh and they have has inspired us. Immortalised in art, Vincent van Gogh who painted many images of the Alpilles trying to capture the unique light, sound and smell in his paintings. The contrast of fresh, snow-capped summits and the sound of cicadas singing in olive groves among the rolling mountains of the Alpilles is truly breathtaking.
On to the beautiful but vastly different architecture of the two areas. We have a few lovely boutique hotels in mind to help you truly relax into the culture of each region. Delight in the Provencal cuisine. The beautiful, fresh and light ingredients match the temperature and the scenery of the region. Hiking and biking the combination of the Alps and the Alpilles will give you a spectacular trip.
If you are looking for a new experience and, like us, love the challenge of doing something truly unique, join us on this adventure hiking from the Alps to the Alpilles.
Warm regards from the mountains,
