We have already experienced summer skiing and early snow in the Alps this September. We love snow in September, it helps our winter planning to look out the window to see snow speckled summits. You can see our view in the image above. The chill in the air and the snow on the peaks motivates us and get us in the wintery mood early. With so much coming up, we’re excited about this winter season.
The importance of being in the field
This summer I was injured. This meant that while I could visit my clients on trips, I could not guide as much as I wanted to. Besides the fact that I love being in the field I did notice one other important thing about being physically present on trips. I have often taken it for granted how much I talk to clients and get running feedback. They tell me what they like and what they might like to change or experience on the trip. This is a crucial part of a ski safari. We change things on the spot and that is the fun of it. One perfect example comes to mind…
Short-notice summer skiing and early snow
One mountain hiking adventure in early September, while the weather was still warm and the hiking was great, our guests suggested a day of summer skiing. They had noticed the white, glacier-tipped mountains around them and decided they would like to ski, late the evening before. Of course, being flexible and well-connected, we jumped at the chance to do what we love best and created a ski day from scratch. It was fabulous. The sun was out, the sky was a dazzling blue and it was cold on top, about a 20 degree difference from the lower hiking trails.
Situations such as skiing in September are hard to predict in advance. You are never sure that the day is actually going to happen, but when it does it can be a blast. In this case, it was wonderful. Switzerland is home to a few resorts where we can ski all year round. When summer skiing on the glacier you are mostly in the company of ski teams from all over Europe who train year-round. The world’s highest ski lifts offer access to these glaciers, meaning we can reach outstanding summer skiing. So even in the summer, skiing is on our minds.
