Five signs of a real tailor-made ski trip

Recently I have observed that most people don’t really understand what a tailor-made ski trip is. I think this is because a simple ‘cut and paste’ itinerary is the norm, even if they are sold as ‘tailor-made’ ski trips. On the other hand, clients who have travelled with me before really do understand that with a real tailor- made ski trip anything is possible.

So, what makes a real tailor-made ski trip?

All about you

I know from experience that it is impossible to put a truly tailor-made itinerary together until we know certain things about the participants. This information influences our suggestions of ski areas, hotels, ski descents and the overall logistics of the trip. To receive this information I often have to insist, but it pays off for everyone involved. So look out for questions.

Insider hotel knowledge

The Alps has a special hotel situation. All rooms have not been created equal. Looks can be deceiving when searching online, and the gap between expectations and reality can be disappointingly huge. Now that your ski organisers know what you want, they can find you something impressive to match.

Location, location, location

False marketing presents another trap that’s easy to fall into. Websites often mention a ‘room with a mountain view’. Of course, we are surrounded by them in the Alps, but you probably want the mountain view: to gaze at the iconic local peak from your cosy Egyptian cotton linen.

Know your tracks

As someone who has been a snowboarder for over 20 years I receive a lot of requests for snowboard safaris. This is because snowboarders know that a skier’s line is not the same as a snowboarder’s line. The terrain for a snowboarder can make or break a holiday, so you want to be sure you’re heading to the right areas. A backside traverse for too long will reduce even the most experienced snowboarder to tears. This is an example of where a real tailor-made ski trip makes all the difference.

Work around the weather

But what really takes the cake is being able to work around the weather. I say this all the time but I don’t think I can say it enough. To get the best out of the Alps, you need a guided trip, local knowledge and real-tailor made. When you have the knowledge and the flexibility to find the best conditions each day, the sky literally is the limit.

Don’t accept anything less than a real tailor-made ski trip. This will take more time to prepare, more patience and flexibility to get things right… but when you’re gliding through untouched powder on a descent all to yourself, you’ll know it was totally worth the wait. Give us a call, we waiting to plan your next tailor-made ski experience in the Alps.

Warm regards from the mountains.
